Realms of the Unseen — Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium 2026

HASA's annual research symposium which explores what lies beyond immediate perception in art and visual culture. How do artists represent the invisible, the hidden, and the overlooked? How do objects, images, and spaces reveal meanings that are not immediately seen? From visual symbolism to material traces and unseen narratives, this year’s symposium invites you to
consider how art makes the invisible visible and how interpretation reveals deeper layers of meaning.

A catered talk by Guillaume Cassegrain, a visiting French scholar, exploring the role of animals in early modern painting — specifically the motif of animals gazing at the viewer, and what that gaze reveals about empathy and visual singularity.
